Following a series of meetings with researchers at the Institute for
Ageing and Health, Jennie filmed scientists re-enacting their research activities behind a backlit screen. In the resulting film installation “a is for ageing”, we see silhouettes of scientists in their laboratories, researching the biology of ageing, alongside silhouettes of Jennie’s elderly relatives carrying out their own daily routines.

“a is for ageing” explores the experience and the science of ageing,
focussing on ideas gathered as ‘a-z’ lists of ageing, written by scientists, academics and various elderly people. “a is for ageing” explores an alternative approach to health education, drawing on Jennie’s professional background in physiotherapy. The alphabet is a form from our childhoods, which brings out a light-hearted element in this serious subject.

Jennie has also created a series of shadow prints exploring research and the experience of ageing.

The music for “a is for ageing” is by Quinta.
